Dante x Alonso

El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, together with the Institute of Italian Culture in Buenos Aires, presents “Dante by Alonso”, an exhibit which brings together 47 works on paper by the Argentine master Carlos Alonso (Mendoza, 1929), inspired by the great Florentine poet and in commemoration of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death (1265-1321).

Curated by the Director of Bellas Artes, Andres Duprat, the works in this exhbition are comprised of drawings, collages, etchings, watercolors and pen and ink that Alonso dedicated to Dante in two distinct moments of his career; the first images are from the 1960’s--many of which were created in Italy in 1968—and are principally small portaits, while the second group dates from a period between 2000 and 2009.

The curator explains, “These works connect two distant periods and are proof that horrors continue to repeat themselves and to feed our modern-day imagination. Similar to other moments in his creative output as an artist, Alonso works with a classic in order to unleash his brutally critical perspective, shedding light on the many problems and injustices that mark our times.”

The works exhibited are from the artist’s personal collection, from the Carlos Alonso-Mansión Stoppel Museum (located in the Argentine Province of Mendoza) and from private collections.
